French composer and conductor, André Messager (1853-1929) initially studied sacred music, holding positions as choirmaster and organist. Before long, he went on to form closer links with the theatre and began to work as a conductor at the Opéra-Comique and for the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. He then dedicated himself to his career as a composer, turning his hand to different genres ranging from the ballet and operetta to opéra comique.
