Seven years after Barkouf (1860), Offenbach returned to the Opéra-Comique with a new adaptation – after that of Piccinni (1805) – of Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoé. This still relatively unknown work, brimming with original musical ideas, features a flavoursome “pot-au-feu” scene in which we learn that cannibalism was invented by a missionary priest!
