This opéra-bouffe of 1868 – the second version of 1874 has become a classic of the genre – takes us to Lima, where the Viceroy of Peru sets off incognito to observe his subjects. What follows is a series of amorous adventures involving the Viceroy and two poor street singers, La Périchole and her fiancé Piquillo. The result of Offenbach’s talent is as usual euphoric and exhilarating!
