In Safety Last! Harold Lloyd embodies a person very different from Charlot or the Keaton characters: a young nobody fully immersed in modern urban life, between social ambition, misunderstandings and the need to “be seen”. The famous skyscraper staircase, ending not by chance in the scene of a clock, is the culmination of a relentlessly comic sequence, in which every gag arises out of an obstacle that triggers the next. But this is also a bitter laugh aimed at the new city rhythms of the time, where everyone felt themselves turned into a cog.
