Easy Street

Between the poor, violent streets of Easy Street and the open spaces of The Vagabond, Charlie moves through the modern world from an impossible position: at once excluded from it and its most clear-sighted observer. A policeman by chance in the first film and a wandering violinist in the second, he confronts poverty, oppression, and loneliness without ever giving up laughter. Yet comedy continually cracks open into melodrama, and the Tramp becomes a mask capable of transforming fragility into freedom, and pain into a sense of grateful wonder. The images will be accompanied by a piano repertoire that often thrived on such contrasts: that of French Romanticism.
