This programme brings together two superb and distinct female perspectives from the silent film era. In The Ocean Waif, Alice Guy weaves elements of fairy-tale, suspense and irony around a young women on the run who takes shelter in an isolated house by the sea. Elvira Notari’s views on the Avellino and Treviso festivals go back rather to one of the key forms of early cinema, pioneered by the Lumière brothers: the view, which captures fragments of everyday life and turns them into wonders. The result is a still vivid dialogue blending narrative, observation and the imprint of reality.
