Donizetti’s opera Lucie di Lammermoor, based on Sir Walter Scott’s historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor, was first performed in Paris in 1837 at the Théâtre-Italien, and such was its success that Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz decided to translate the libretto into French. The French version was premiered at the Théâtre de la Renaissance (1839), then taken up by the Paris Opéra in 1846. Set in sixteenth-century Scotland, the plot follows the tragic destiny of the lovers Edgard and Lucie.
