American jazz reached the shores of Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century, causing a scandal for a while, before being fully accepted in the years following the Second World War. That long period of acclimatisation coincided with the golden age of the French mélodie. From Gabriel Fauré to Francis Poulenc, the genre was at the forefront of harmonic research and became a marker for France’s aesthetic identity. Accompanied by jazz pianist Étienne Manchon, Judith van Wanroij, soprano, and Philippe Estèphe, baritone, propose in this concert a dialogue between those two worlds – so close in their refinement, and yet so far apart.
