Despite the great difference in style between the virtuosity of Liszt’s early works and the abstraction of Claude Debussy, it is nonetheless possible to identify traits that are typical of French piano compositions.  This is particularly evident when considering the influence of Italian bel canto, the strict compositional style of César Franck and the harmonic textures characteristic of Ravel.
