A gunsmith promises his daughter’s hand to whichever of his craftsmen can forge the finest sword. Taking this curious theme and a plot that lends itself to disguises, Clémence de Grandval pursued her conquest of the opera stage under the transparent pseudonym “Clémence Valgrand”. Premiered at the Théâtre-Lyrique in May 1863, Les Fiancés de Rosa received positive reviews, but ran for only seven performances.
