In this anniversary year, the Orchestre National de France celebrates Gabriel Fauré with a full-length programme juxtaposing his most celebrated orchestral works with others that are less frequently performed in concert. The Ballade (1879-81) and the Fantaisie (1918) for piano and orchestra lie at the two extremes of his output for orchestra and illustrate the progression of his style, from an early idiom with Romantic overtones to the fervour of a maturity that seems liberated from modernist expectations. Here is a chance to rediscover the composer in all his diversity, and to ensure that the worldwide fame of the Requiem does not overshadow the rest of Fauré’s output with orchestra.
