Combining Greek mythology (the story of Ariadne) with Symbolist poetry, the libretto of Ariane, written by Catulle Mendès, takes Massenet on a journey of heroism, passion and despair. ‘It would be difficult to find a simpler and more poignant subject’, he later commented.
