In choosing, in 1839 and 1840, to compose for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass – rather than the traditional combination of piano and string quartet – Louise Farrenc was making a direct reference to Franz Schubert, whose Trout Quintet, published in 1829, had a profound influence on his contemporaries.
