Saint-Saëns composed three oratorios, of which the Christmas Oratorio, written in just twelve days, is the second. It was premiered on 24 December 1858 at the Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine – or, less formally, La Madeleine – where the composer was organist. First performance four years earlier with Jules Pasdeloup conducting, Gounod’s First Symphony brings to mind works by Haydn, and also by Schubert in its melodic charm and euphonic timbres.
