Luigi Cherubini’s Médée was originally conceived as a tragédie lyrique for performance at the Académie Royale de Musique, i.e. the Paris Opéra. The revolutionary period, however, gave the work a rough ride, and in the end, it was premiered, in a parlé-chanté version, at the Opéra-Comique (Théâtre Feydeau) in 1897. Using recitative instead of spoken dialogue, this new version respects the composer’s original intention.
