Louise Farrenc demonstrated remarkable interpretative and compositional skill, while also playing a key role in the educational and musicological spheres of her time. Yet, for years, she was paid less than her male colleagues. Her story still resonates today as a forerunner of issues such as equal pay, work-life balance, women’s access to leadership roles, workplace discrimination, and harassment. While the recognition of female talent remains an ongoing challenge, labour law has stepped in to build a protective framework. The talk will focus on both the progress made and the critical issues within regulatory systems, exploring the intersection between culture, law, and gender equality.
