From Xavier Foley's Good Times, with its lively, contemporary energy, to the poignant lines of Onslow's Piano Quintet in B minor, each work in this programme reveals a unique facet of musical expression. In the second half, Saint-Saëns's first Sonata for Cello and Piano, carried by an obvious complicity between the two instruments, paves the way for Louise Farrenc's Piano Quintet in A minor, a vibrant and assertive work that closes the concert with a burst of power and lyricism.
