A year after Charles Lecocq, Charles Silver (1868-1949) in turn adapted Perrault’s famous fairytale (Sleeping Beauty), turning it into a splendid opéra-féerie that was premiered in January 1902 at the Grand-Théâtre in Marseille, with sets by the painter Eugène Apy. The title role was made to measure for the composer’s wife, the coloratura soprano Georgette Bréjean-Silver, who also sang the part of the Queen.
