Boulevard des Italiens
ORCHESTRA DEL TEATRO COMUNALE DI BOLOGNA
Frédéric Chaslin conductor
With the support of the Palazzetto Bru Zane
In early 2020, when Benjamin Bernheim decided to record a programme devoted to the Italian composers who lived in Paris for Deutsche Grammophon, he asked the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française for advice. A number of exciting suggestions proved appealing: arias by composers Spontini and Cherubini, French versions of Verdi’s and Puccini’s arias, or arias specifically composed for the French versions of their operas (as was customary in Paris up until the 1960s), as well as an aria from Mascagni’s forgotten Amica. Motivated by a desire to paint a vivid picture of the output of Italian composers enjoyed by Parisians during this time period, this album invites the listener to discover a glimpse of the music which led to these composers’ wild and enduring popularity. Through Palazzetto Bru Zane’s tireless editorial work, the album began to take shape.
Scores edited and provided by the Palazzetto Bru Zane (except tracks 6–7 and 15–16)
