From Georges Bizet’s student cantata of the early 1850s Le Retour de Virginie (based on Bernardin de Saint-Pierre) to Maurice Ravel’s Bolero (1928), this concert explores the orientalist imagination of French composers, with a pertinent contribution from a woman composer, Mel Bonis’s Suite orientale (1900).
