Roméo et Juliette

A few months after Nicolas Dalayrac’s opéra-comique on the same subject (for the Théâtre Favart), Daniel Steibelt turned to Shakespeare’s famous play for the Théâtre Feydeau. While some elements of the original drama remained, including of course the blossoming love between two young Italians from feuding families, the plot was radically overhauled by the librettist, who even gave it a happy ending! The composer, however, was at the height of his artistry.
