After composing various stage works (generally under pseudonyms), then taking an interest in instrumental music and becoming involved in the SociĂ©tĂ© Nationale de Musique, ClĂ©mence de Grandval (1828-1907) turned to her last major composition, the opera Mazeppa. Inspired by the historical figure Ivan Mazeppa, a Cossack military leader, the opera was acclaimed by the press at its premiere in Bordeaux: âMazeppa has inspired Mme C. de Grandval to produce a truly remarkable score, the success of which will cause a great stir in the music world.â
