La Naissance de Vénus (1883) – which Fauré called a ‘pearl-grey blue’ score – and La Damoiselle élue (1888) show two facets of French modernity in the making. Starting out from the highly academic genre of the cantata, the two works chart new, though not yet radical, directions.
