Travelling is not always a bed of roses. Being far away from home, and friends, and everyday routines leaves plenty of time for reflection, and being alone in unfamiliar surroundings may lead to stirrings of melancholy. The Romantics’ instrument of choice for the expression of such feelings was the cello, an instrument that is also capable of providing a fiery evocation of the diversions that enable travellers to shake off their torpor: dances from the East or from Bohemia which, with their contagious euphoria, restore the delights of being in a foreign land. Here Louis Rodde, cello, and Gwendal Giguelay, piano, capture a whole range of emotions that may be experienced during evenings abroad.
