We tend to associate the string quartet with Austrian and German composers, from Haydn to Brahms, but many such compositions also came into being in nineteenth-century France – our task now being to attempt to trace them all. The Våren Quartet perform here two little-known string quartets: no. 2 (late 1820s) by Auguste de Sayve, and no. 8 (late 1850s) by Charles Dancla. The former is a well-balanced piece, as one would expect from a musician who studied with Anton Reicha, while the latter, by a disciple of Pierre Baillot, is true to the brilliant virtuosic tradition.
