Symphonic Music

There is a clear chronological connection between the first performances of Beethoven’s symphonies in France (1807) and Étienne-Nicolas Méhul’s compositions in the genre (1808–1810). At a time when the Conservatoire composers were facing criticism for incompetence, Méhul decided to challenge Germany on its home ground.
