Seeing Music: the Staging of French Opera during the Romantic Period

Live Concert Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal
Sat 9 March 2019
Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Montréal
Although opera would seem to be a primarily vocal genre centred around the singers’ expertise, it was – in France in the Romantic era – a total work of art in which the dances, sets, costumes and stage design were accorded as much importance as the music. Certain pedestrian works, therefore, enjoyed huge success because of the clever visual devices employed in them. By penetrating the secrets of French Romantic opera production, we will discover the complexity of a genre which aimed to be not only purely artistic but also historical, moral and political.
