Operetta and café-concert at the time of the Moulin Rouge

Lecture Salle Bourgie Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal
Although Berlioz, Debussy, and the Grand Opera of Meyerbeer might seem to represent the sum of French Romantic music between them, we should not be too quick to forget that other icon, Jacques Offenbach and, at his back, the thousands of forgotten works of light music, from the café-concerts of Montmartre to the small theatres along the “Boulevard du Crime” (the 19th-century nickname for the Boulevard du Temple).
