Phryné, the most popular opera by Camille Saint-Saëns after Samson et Dalila, was premièred at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1893 and enjoyed immediate success. Its publisher, Durand, then began to invest in translations in order to solicit performances abroad: French and Italian vocal scores were issued in June 1896, followed by a German version. As the managements of some theatres risked being put off by the linguistic specificity of the spoken dialogue, André Messager composed new recitatives, skilfully interwoven into Saint-Saëns’s music. This CD-book presented by the Palazzetto Bru Zane offers an opportunity to discover that very rare version of Phryné.
