At a time when modern administrative organisation favoured the polarisation of power in (national or regional) capitals, did music follow exactly the same path? Artistic creation seems to respond well to this concept of dissemination by means of radiation, but the musical life of peripheral cities is not always subject to central initiatives. On a European scale, the aim here is to overcome the preconceived notion – often forged in cultural capitals – that the rest of a given territory merely tries to imitate what is going on in its major urban centres.
