From the mid-19th century onwards, the fashion for sea-bathing and spa treatments had a positive impact on the artistic activity of small and medium-sized towns. Tourists and visitors who came to take the waters, a long way from their circle of acquaintances, sought ways to fill their considerable free time during their stay. The resorts, vying to come up with ingenious ways to attract as many people as possible, swiftly built new temples to seasonal pursuits: the casinos. People not only visited these venues to gamble, but also to partake of the other activities on offer, particularly concerts, shows, and even operas. The significance of these music venues, which has hitherto been somewhat overlooked, is long overdue for study.
