The cycle devoted to works by Jules Massenet provides an opportunity to take another look at a research theme that was initiated by Annegret Fauser with her study of Esclarmonde: the treatment of sexuality in music, the increasing presence of eroticism on the opera stage at the turn of the century, and the resulting perceptions of gender.
